THIS IS ASTANAAstana. The capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan is ten years old this year (official celebrations took place in July). The city's designation as capital initiated one of the most ambitious urban development projects of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The singular vision of President Nursultan Nazarbayev's was realised by a host of world-renowned architects including Norman Foster, Manfredi Nicoletti and Kisho Kurokawa. Astana plays a central role as the principle point of contact between Europe and Asia. As a communications and transportation hub between both continents – Astana knows no rival. This film – THIS IS ASTANA - shows captures the unique atmosphere of a capital that rivals all the dynamism of longer-established cities like New York.
